Life of Kachin women in Bangkok

I do not know if I have to identify myself as a feminist. But, I certainly see injustice in society for the women both in private and public realm. Women are the one who are most vulnerable in life since they are deprive of education and emotionally discouraged in many ways. The lack of education among women make the root of all problems cause in life. In this modern world, one certainly need to know what is going on in this world. Education also thought us to think critically. Yet, there is a lot of people especially women do not have ability to know what is happening around them. As a lucky bird to be able to fly and observe in this world,I feel such pity for these women. The women that I have been engaged are most prone to social insecurity and loss of life ambition. I would not identify this for western society rather for Asian and minority society.

As a Christian, I go to church occasionally in Bangkok. They come from Burma where the situation in present is military rule and authoritative regime. Most of the church members are women. There is also a lot of spinsters in our church. Most of them send hard earn remittance to home. Their education in Burma is high school. Most of them have very basic education, just enough to be able to read and write. Our culture Kachin, is mostly patriarchal and girls are not given education. Men are given priority since the sons will take care of the family. So, there is no doubt that women end up not getting enough education. Most of them have to work here as nanny, maids, or night bazaar sellers.

Most of them are lucky enough to get to work as foreigner's maid. However, with their broken English and fear of losing the job make them to obey their boss for whatever they ask. One of my friends could not even identify the nationality for her boss. She was saying the boss were Australian but we later found out that they were Swiss. We also found out she live in a place like dungeon which is just enough for her to sleep. And she still clean the toilets with her hands. Without knowing her rights, she had little to complain but to work the whole day.

My other friend work her whole life until her late thirties support her family. However, her hard earn money were wasted by her brothers at home. The brothers were lazy and did not do anything but using the remittance from their sisters. Knowing the situation, she still send money since the money is still in the family. After all, the women who are emotional and incapable are helping out the whole family.

There are a lot of other women in the church with similar story. I wonder, how are they going to continue for the rest of their life. With no education and working as maid wouldn't last long. I happen to see that the society should do something to improve the lives of these women.
